Ireland

Ireland is the third largest island in Europe and the population is 4 million people. The capital and largest city is Dublin, and in Ireland you speck both Irish and English. Gaelic is also a popular languages witch is spoken in some areas, mainly along the western seaboard. The island lies right next to Great Britain.

The Irish school has three levels witch are primary, secondary and higher. Education in Ireland is free at all levels, even college. However it's only free for students applying from the EU. School is compulsory for children between six and fifteen, apart from some exceptions.

The biggest sport in Ireland is hurling, that's also the native sport and it's really popular.

The weather is rainy and damp. It rains more than 300 days a year. But the island have some really nice landscapes and the Cliffs Of Moher are one of Ireland's top visitor attractions. The cliffs are 214m high at the highest point and range for 8 kilometers over the Atlantic Ocean on the western seaboard of Country Clare. The longest river is River Shannon (240 miles) and the largest lake is Lough Neagh.

The Irish accent is a bit different from the British accent and one important thing is the pronunciation of ''i'', it sounds more like ''oi''. And in more casual moments they switch the ''th'', in example thinks to ''t'', so it becomes ''tinks''. Also, it can be helpful to think that the whole accent is coming from the front of the mouth. We have a really good video that we want to show you: http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-do-an-irish-accent

We also got some Irish slang

  • Bunk off – to skip school.

  • Chiseler – a child

  • Jacks – toilet

  • Jo maxi – taxi

  • Mot – girlfriend

The most typical food in Ireland is the Irish Stew but they don't use that much spices, so the food doesn't taste a lot.

A famous movie from Ireland is ''Michael Collins'', directed by Neil Jordan in 1996. The movie is based on a true story and the main character, Micheal, is played by Liam Neeson. Another famous movie is ''The Quiet Man'', it's a story about a retired man who finds love in Ireland.

There are also some famous bands such as U2, Westlife and Dropkick Murphys.

Ireland is ranked as one of the wealthiest countries in the world and has got a low corporate tax, who is lower than average EU.

Some industries are chemicals, computer hardware, software and food products.

The first president in the free republic of Ireland was Douglas Hyde in 1922. The whole of Ireland is not independent. The island is split up in two, the east side and the north side. The east side became independent in year 1922, under the rule of Douglas Hyde. But the north side is still under British rule.
